The young Medusa – when beauty becomes a curse

According to Ovid’s stories, Medusa was an exceptionally beautiful young woman with long, magnificent hair. The sea god Poseidon desired her and raped her in the temple of Athena.

But Athena did not punish Poseidon; instead, she punished Medusa: And so, a young, beautiful woman who stood at the dawn of endless possibilities became the monster Medusa, as she is portrayed in later tales.

Medusa’s early life is not the story of a malevolent monster. It is the story of a young woman who was subjected to rape, punishment, abuse and murder, and who was thus made to atone for an act of which she herself was the victim.
